7 Easy Steps to Parent Taught Drivers Ed

Follow our simple guide that shows you all the steps from purchasing our course towards obtaining your learner license and eventually your driver license!

1. Purchase the American Drivers Ed Parent Taught Drivers Ed Course

Purchase our PTDE course to save an average of $250-$450 compared to the traditional driving school classroom.

2. Choose your instructor

The instructor must be the student’s parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent or legal guardian appointed by a court. Check out other eligibility requirements here.

3. Order the PTDE packet

Order your PTDE packet from the TDLR before you get started with your course. The packet is only $20 and is required with every Parent Taught Drivers Ed course.

4. Finish Lesson 3

Once you finish Lesson 3 and pass your Learner License test you will receive your learner license / permit certificate. You may then take this certificate with the required paperwork to obtain your learner license / permit at the DPS!

5. Complete All Instruction Time (Classroom & In-Car)

  • 32 hours of classroom instruction

  • 44 hours of in-car instruction

    • 7 hours of in-car observation

    • 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, and

    • 30 hours of additional driving practice, 10 hours of which must be done at night.

6. Take the ITTD

Take the free 2-hour Impact Texas Teen Drivers course within 90 days of your driving test.

7. Get your driver license!

Once the applicant has held a valid learner license or hardship license for a minimum of six months, reached the age of 16, completed both the classroom and behind-the-wheel portions of driver education, and completed the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) requirement, they are eligible to take the driving test for their provisional license and "graduate" to Phase Two of the Graduated Driver License Program.
