WHAT IS PARENT TAUGHT DRIVERS ED?
Parent Taught Drivers Ed simply means teenagers take the online drivers education Texas course with American Drivers Ed and complete the in-car training phase with a parent or guardian who qualifies as an instructor.
WHO CAN TAKE PARENT TAUGHT DRIVERS ED?
Students ages 14-17 with a parent or guardian who have their license. Parents or guardians are ineligible if they’ve had their license revoked in last three years or more than six points on their record. After six hours of online classroom hours, you’ll be ready to take the learner license written test! With American Drivers Ed you get access to unlimited test retries. As soon as you pass, we’ll send you an email with your learner license certificate! The certificate may then be used to apply for your learner license / permit, how exciting!

INSTRUCTION TIME
A PTDE course consists, at minimum, of 76 hours of instruction time:

32 hours of classroom instruction (must not be completed in fewer than 16 calendar days)

44 hours of in-car instruction made up of
-
seven hours of in-car observation,
-
seven hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, and
-
30 hours of additional driving practice, 10 hours of which must be at done at night.

In-car instruction hours must not be completed in less than 44 calendar days. A student may not be instructed more than two hours in one day. These two hours can be made up of:

Two hours of classroom instruction; or
-
One hour of classroom instruction and one hour of in-car instruction or practice;

After classroom hours are complete, in-car instruction and practice hours are limited to one hour of driving per day.
HOW TO GET YOUR LICENSE
SO HOW DO I GET STARTED?
If you haven’t already, request a drivers education packet from Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). This is required for ALL online Texas Parent Taught Drivers Ed courses and only costs $20. Already did this? You can start the online drivers education course in Texas immediately upon signing up for American Drivers Ed!
WHAT DO I DO AFTER I GET MY PACKET FROM THE TDLR?
After six hours of online Texas drivers education, you’ll be ready to take the learner license test! With American Drivers Ed Texas online driving school you get access to unlimited test retries. And as soon as you pass, we’ll send you an email with your learner license certificate!
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I PASS MY PERMIT TEST?
Bring the certificate we email you to the DPS to get your learner license. Once you’ve completed 44 hours of driving practice with a parent or guardian, finish the online American Drivers Ed Course. Within 90 days of your in-car exam, you must also complete the Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) course, a free, 1-hour video course provided online by the Texas DPS.
FINISHED THE AMERICAN DRIVERS ED COURSE – NOW WHAT?
After we email you your certificate of the Texas drivers ed course completion, schedule and pass a driving test at the DPS office. Once you pass our online Texas driving school, a drivers license is yours!
